Elon Musk laid off half of Twitter’s staff
Last month, American billionaire Elon Musk bought the social media platform Twitter for $44 billion. Soon after buying Twitter, the company’s CEO Parag Agarwal, and several other Elon Musk laid off half of Twitter’s staff. He had previously said the company would need to cut a significant number of jobs to make Twitter profitable. The nightmare began on Friday, November 4 for thousands of Twitter users.
Twitter had about 7,500 employees. More than half of Twitter’s workforce was laid off on Friday, according to reports from Reuters, CNN, Bloomberg, and The Verge. A large number of Twitter workers who lost their jobs received multiple emails from Twitter. However, they sensed the loss of jobs a little earlier. Because before the retrenchment, their access was taken away from various tools of the Twitter company.
On Twitter, employees were unable to log into the apps they used to communicate with each other for work needs, the laptops given to them by the office, and the PCs. Seeing this, many started tweeting that they might be getting laid off.
However, Elon Musk and the company have claimed that the “unfortunately difficult decision” to make these massive layoffs is for the good of Twitter. According to the company’s internal email, everyone will get their due according to the law.
However, some workers sued Twitter after the mass layoffs began. Although Elon Musk should not have any problem if he pays the workers according to the existing law. The departments which have seen the most layoffs are:
- Product and Safety
- Tweet curation
- Ethical AI
- Data Science
- Machine learning
- Social Good
But the core engineering team has also been cut, The Verge and Reuters reported. Twitter’s offices have been temporarily closed and many employees have been blocked from accessing their accounts, despite not receiving layoff emails. Access will be restored to those who will have jobs after a decision is made regarding staffing.
Elon Musk is sticking to his stance despite criticism for mass layoffs. “Unfortunately, when the company is losing $4 million a day, there is no other option,” he said in a tweet. In other words, he means that Twitter is making losses of 4 million dollars a day, so there is no other way but to lay off workers.
Elon Musk has been going through various dramas since announcing his intention to buy Twitter. He first offered the company to buy Twitter. Although initially hesitant to sell Twitter, Twitter’s board of directors decided to sell the company. But then Elon Musk refused to buy Twitter citing fake Twitter accounts. Then Twitter authorities went to court to force Musk to buy Twitter. Finally, Elon Musk bought Twitter.
He was then rumored to introduce a $20/month package for Twitter Blue Badges. However, later it was reported that the cost of that package was brought down to $8/month. So far that package has not been launched. Maybe it will change more. And now comes the news of mass layoffs.
